What is Ectobox? Ektos is Greek for "outside". So, Ectobox is a derivative of "outside the box". Since we do software, we take the idea a bit further and it becomes "software solutions outside the box".

Who am I? What do I do?

Well, let me tell you...I'm a guy who asks the "how?" and "why?" questions in life. The makes me curious, driven to understand how things work, and to build things.

I also have a pretty darn good ability to teach things. I sometimes get sick (in a good way) of how many analogies I'll use in a day to explain various things to customers. I'm surprised my customers don't complain about the overabundance of analogies.

With those strengths I've ended up working in software and I love it! We've all had at least one job in our lives where we eventually dreaded going to work each and every day. Well, crazy as it seems, I've been running Ectobox, Inc. for 10+ years and don't feel that. This is such an awesome job, and interesting work...learning new technologies, creating solutions to customer problems, etc.

I got into it in an interesting way...I was working for an accounting firm long, long ago. It was OK, but not my bag. I had previously encountered Microsoft Access 2.0 in a previous job at the University of Pittsburgh and really liked what I could do with it. A good friend of mine, Glenn Hirsh (still a good friend, at least when I remember to return his calls) told me, "Dude, you can make money doing that Access stuff." Then he told me, "Dude, you can work at home doing that stuff."

I was sold! I made my departure, started up Ectobox, Inc. (under a different name at the time), "apprenticed" with a local software developer for a while, went off on my own, and haven't looked back.

Today I work with a lot of great customers creating custom software applications for them using Microsoft Access, SQL Server, .NET, Word, Excel, and other Microsoft and non-Microsoft tools. I also work with only highly qualified and capable programmers in Pittsburgh to help me get various and sundry projects done for customers.

After many customers and many projects I've learned a thing or two. I've learned enough that I'd consider my knowledge and experience, as well as my approach to projects, exceptional.
